Clean Water Act / NPDES Discharge Standards

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) and United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) regulate provisions of with the Federal Clean Water Act by regulating the Water Reclamation Facility’s discharges into the East Branch of the DuPage River. This is accomplished pursuant to a National Pollution Discharge Elimination Systems (NPDES) permit regulating specific constituents in the discharges to the receiving stream. Additionally, the IEPA regulates the disposal of biosolids, a by-product of the treatment process.

The NPDES permit is subject to renewal, generally every five years.  The current NPDES permit expires September 30, 2020.
