How to Dispose of HHW Safely
Residents and small businesses are encouraged to safely dispose of their HHW at the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) licensed regional facility at Naperville Household Hazardous Waste Facility, located at 156 Fort Hill Drive, every Saturday and Sunday, (excluding holidays) from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Acceptable Household Items
  • Aerosol cans
  • Auto fluids (oil, gasoline and antifreeze)
  • Asbestos materials (that fits in a 55 gallon drum up to 50 lbs)
  • Batteries (including automotive, marine and sump pump)
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Flammables (oil, gas, lighter fluid, kerosene, rubbing alcohol, etc.)
  • Fluorescent light bulbs/tubes and CFLs (sealed, unbroken only)
  • Hobby chemicals and unknowns
  • Household cleaners, drain openers and pool chemicals
  • Mercury
  • Oil-based paints, wood stains, varnishes and solvents
  • Peanut oils
  • Poisons, pesticides, insecticides and fertilizers
  • Propane tanks (20 pounds or less)
  • Thermostats
  • Unknown hazardous substances
Unacceptable Waste
  • Ammunition
  • Compressed gas (other than propane)
  • Electronics (accepted at recycling drop-off center)
  • Latex paint (In order to dispose of latex paint in the regular trash, the paint must be hardened. To purchase paint hardener, visit your local hardware store, or use an absorbent like kitty litter or sawdust. Once dried, leave the paint lid off, so the driver can see that the can is dry.)
  • Radioactive materials
  • Sharps (needles or lancets)
  • Smoke detectors
  • Tires
  • Non-Hazardous Trash and Recyclables
How to Transport HHW
To safely transport materials, make sure containers are securely sealed. Materials should be left in their original containers with a legible label. Do not mix chemicals together. Place containers in a box lined with plastic and a layer of kitty litter as protection against a spill or leak. Transport items in the trunk of your car. When you arrive at the drop-off location, please stay in your vehicle.
